Audacity won't run in XP

I cannot get Audacity 1.2.6 to run in XP. The program installs OK but when I run the program I immediately get an error message saying "Audacity.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" and then there is the option to report the problem to Microsoft.
I have another computer with XP and it installs OK and works on that. The only difference between the two is that one has Microsoft office installed and the one it won't work on has OpenOffice installed. Don't know if that significant.
I have tried to download from different sources as suggested in FAQ's.
Any ideas?
