Noise when trying to record

Hi.I have been using Audacity for a few years now to record vinyl albums for conversion to MP3 files with no problems.I am using an ARTcessories Phono Plus USB interface and Audacity version 1.3(unicode).When I tried to use the program today all I got was noise that completely filled the waveform display area with solid blue and meter toolbar filled completely red. This occured with and without a record being played and with the Phono Plus plugged in or out.I also got the same problem with an earlier version of Audacity. Is this a problem with my PC or the Audacity software?Any help to sort this problem would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks Bambi.

It's probably the USB connection.
Check that the USB cable is seated well in the socket and reboot the computer.
The ARTcessories Phono Plus USB must be connected directly to the computer USB port - not through a USB hub.

The phono amplifier is plugged into the computer with the USB connector, right? Like the "A" connector here...

Do you get the noise after you pull the USB plug out of the computer?
Have you tried to record shows from the internet or use Skype after this all worked last time?

Been thinking about my noise problem. The only thing that had altered on my PC is that my Grandaughter opened her own account on my PC.I got rid of her account and the problem was cured. Thanks for your help.
