How does Audacity use resourses

I just recorded about hour and a half of music and exported it to disk. I have a gig of ram and a 2.2 ghz processor. With the songs still in Audacity I was showing using about 688 meg of ram. I had no problem exporting the files as mp3 but when I tried to close Audacity, after deleting the unexported music still open in Audacity, it still took about five minutes to close, kept bringing up the close program , end now window but would not close. I have been using the program for a couple of years. It works better now that I have got more ram but still seems to kind of halfway lock up. Is this just a bug?
Thanks, Randy J

How did you do that? Audacity doesn't actually delete anything when it's open and if you tried to manipulate the files in the _DATA folder, you created an unstable program.

not delete them but just close them so the pane is empty.
what I am wondering if the music you record using audacity is stored in RAM before being exported as .wav or .mp3. My task manager shows audacity using 688 megs of RAM.

Since you seem to have a flowers and candy relationship with your RAM, have you ever run the Windows Memory Diagnostic?
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
If you have a heavy memory load and your machine starts to act "funny," it's possible you have a bad strip. I don't accept a machine for production until it can run this test continuously for 24 hours. Any instability in the machine will cause a crash or a flag--eventually.
