loud, steady noise 20 seconds into each track

Recording is fine until about 20 seconds, at which point a loud, steady noise completely takes over. Any ideas on what's causing this and how to avoid it?
My guess is that you are using a USB audio device and it doesn't work reliably.
If this is the case, you need to use a different audio device (such as a decent quality PCI sound card.)
