Without more detailed information, all I can say is that something is wrong.

OS - Windows Vista Home?
Audacity version 1.2.6?
What audio device are you recording from? (USB turntable, on-board Crystal audio, SoundBlaster Audigy....)
What audio device are you using for playback?
What are you doing when Audacity crashes?
Is it repeatable?
Do you have any plug-ins installed?
Anything else that you think may help to diagnose the problem?

In my experience, if I record a couple of hours of music or more Audicity will freeze seeming because it needs more RAM. Audacity uses lots of memory.

More likely it is running out of space for temporary files.

The temp directory is specified in "Edit->Preferences->Directories" and the amount of data can grow huge - several times bigger than the projects, because of "undo" data. Temporary files will normally be deleted when you close Audacity, but this does not happen if Audacity crashes.

While Audacity is not open, it is safe to delete all files (if any) from the temporary directory. The exception to this is if you have a "crashed project" that you hope to recover.

Try shutting down any other programs and non-essential background processes that are running, particularly anti-virus or other security programs (you may wish to disconnect from the internet first), and see if that helps.

I'm having the exact same problem. I haven't had any problems with Audacity until I got my new laptop that has Vista. Usually after I record one thing and hit stop to stop the recording, a box pops up that says the program has to be closed. I lose my recording and that's it. If I open the program again, I can record but then when I stop the recording--Crash!

I've tried reinstalling, restarting my computer, etc. but nothing is taking care of the problem completely.

Somebody must have some technical knowledge regarding Vista problems. If you have no idea, then don't reply. We need help with this, not just random comments. Thanks!

Solution...............

I downloaded the Beta version and that is working great with Vista. The original version doesn't seem to work. So, if you're having the same problem with crashing that I was, try Beta. Good luck.
