THIS LADY NEEDS HELP i wanna record!

AHHhhhhh! finally found a free editing software.... extremely pleased until i realized i cant use it at all. I am using windows ...i downloaded the program and it made a blip at the beginning of recording and now will not let me record at all. I have used my simple sound recorder with my built in microphone before, but for some reason it wont work for audacity. Ive fiddled around with the prefrences.... but nothing... PLEASE help!
