TRYING to get more than a flat line

I've just installed the program, I got a wave the first time I used it, then maddenly it stopped!!!! I uninstalled, tried again. Still nothing. I of course have playing with everything I can think of to fix the problem. Now I get the error messege "I can't record because I can't open the sound device"
!!!!!!!
Help!!!!!!

You need to give us a few more hints.
What kind of Windows machine and by who? Laptop? Which version of Audacity exactly?
What are you trying to record? YouTube? Are you singing into a microphone? What kind of microphone? USB?

Lets see: Windows XP, 1.2.6, USB turntable.
(and I'm going to be gone for the next week, so I won't be able to post.)
