Why are some tracks shown as mono when they are not?

Hello, I have a big problem witha audacity, and it's that it shows a few songs I import as mono, even if they are stereo.

I can make them back in stereo in audacity, but the quality is VERY bad. And if I listen to the files on other players they play in their normal quality.

Why would audacity export them in one channel (mono) if they are stereo?? Some other files which are stereo are imported as they are - stereo, but some randomly choose to be mono for some odd reason. It even happens for the songs that I've ripped myself from the original CDs, and from the same CD some songs are mono and some stereo. How come?

No, not by CDEX. I use BonkEnc. But it's not just with the songs I rip myself. It happens with some downloaded files too.

Go into Audacity preferences and make sure they're set for 44100, 16-bit, Stereo. Restart Audacity.

Audacity is supposed to assume the sound standards of the first track you open. It should never confuse mono and stereo tracks.

Audacity will not start over when you reinstall it. It keeps preference files in the Dreaded Windows Registry and if they're damaged, they will survive a reinstall and keep reinfecting the new software.

In any event, you should be in Audacity 1.3.11. Audacity 1.2 hasn't been patched or updated in a very long time and is no longer supported. You can have both versions safely on your machine, but you can only use one at a time. Audacity 1.3 Projects will not open in 1.2.

FWIW, I've seen that happen in Audacity 1.2 - I've no idea why, but I've not had it happen in 1.3.11

Thank you guys for info. I think I'll get the new version of Audacity then. Again, thanks for the help!
