Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Opening files in Audacity won't work!

Post by Dunvi » Thu Jan 24, 2008 12:23 am

I can't open any files in Audacity. Both import audio... and open... will open the usual dialogue... and then everything will crash. Audacity itself seems to work fine - I have to open the files from explorer, though, and I can't cut two songs together. Help, please!

Which version of Audacity? What Operating System? What format are the files you are trying to open?

Can you record anything? Can you record something and then save an Audacity project and open that?

I'm running Windows XP, and 1.2.6 of Audacity. I can save, and I can open anything if I do it from Explorer - but that means I can't put two pieces of music together, which is sort of the main reason I'm trying to use Audacity (plus it would be nice to be able to open files properly).

So you're seeing the opening dialog with a progress bar and then sometime after that shows up the program crashes...

That's a new one for me.

Do you even get the chance to click "play"? Or does it crash before then?

Off the top of my head, I can think of a few things you can try to help us narrow it down.
1) Can you record anything with Windows Sound Recorder? Even if it's just silence you're recording, it will help to know if you can at least hit the record button and not see a crash. Windows Sound Recorder is in the start -> programs -> accessories -> entertainment menu (I think)
2) It's possible that the files you're trying to open aren't recognized by Audacity (even if they're called .wav, there are a few bizarre wav formats floating around). Go to the C:Windowsmedia (or similar) folder and try to open up any of the sound files there. They'll all be standard wav files.
3) Open up Audacity and go to the Edit -> preferences -> audio i/o menu. What do you have selected as the playback and recording sources?

No, see, I can edit anything fine, once it's open, but I have to open it indirectly, by right clicking on the file in explorer and choosing "open in..." and selecting Audacity. If I open the normal "open" window, where you choose the file to open, then the whole thing just closes a millisecond after it appears. This means that I can't combine two different music files.

Alternately, you could drag and drop files from Windows Explorer onto the Audacity window to open them.

The real question is why is the "Open" dialog crashing Audacity? That I can't answer.
