I am using Audacity 1.2.6 on a laptop with Windows XP. I am trying to edit parts out of a .WAV file I recorded myself. This file if burned to a CD will play on my stereo. Windows Media Player will also play it.
I set the Preferences as suggested on page 22 of the Manual. The file loads when I use "Import Audio in the Project menu. When I press the "Play" button it plays in about 1/10 second. If I highlight parts of it and them press "Play" the same thing happens. I hear a "squeal" in the laptop's speakers when I do this.
What is wrong?
File plays in about 1/10 second

Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Re: File plays in about 1/10 second
You are trying to play a highly compressed or processed music file that Audacity doesn't understand. Audacity isn't a very good format converter. You have to already be in WAV or MP3 before you try to edit.
Convert outside of Audacity with Super or Switch (download).
In some cases, Audacity 1.3.11 or 1.3.12 with FFMpeg installed can deal with more music formats. You can put both versions safely on your machine, but only use one at a time. Audacity 1.3 Projects will not open in 1.2.

It IS a WAV file. It is not compressed in any way. I recorded it myself on my Marantz PMD661 recorder on the CD format: 16 bit, 44.1 KHz sampling rate. It is not an MP3 or any other compression. It will play on my CD player (burned to a CD) which won't play any type of compressed format.

I figured it out. Lots of fiddling and muddling through. Don't ask how.
Free software, of which Audacity is an example, works, as does the Lord, in strange and mysterious ways.

No, but you had to go through a Music CD Authoring Program before you got the physical Music CD and those automatically translate the outside world to standard Music CD format. They have no choice.
If you didn't go through a Music CD Authoring Program, then you have a CD player that will play many different formats including Data CD, so neither test tells us very much.

It's the first thing we are going to ask. Is it a difference between Right-Click the File > Open With --or-- Audacity > File > Open? Or Audacity > File > Import?
You shouldn't need any tricks to open a straight WAV file.
Download any of these short WAV files and see if you have troubles opening them.

I know it doesn't seem like it, but when you find a problem like this, you could become an Audacity Celebrity, particularly if you can cause the problem to happen any time you want.
You should download and install Audacity 1.3.11 or 1.3.12. You can safely have 1.2 and 1.3 on your machine.
See if 1.3 has troubles opening the file.
