audacity opens a new track!

hi all.
i have been keyword searching but to no avail. perhaps someone can help please.
is there a way to prevent audicity from opening a new track every time i begin recording?
i have searched through the help and now this forum. its really a pain to keep closing the new record window.
i use xp and suse 13 so help for either platform is appreciated. additionally if there is no workaround, perhaps someone could point me to a point in the source that might cover this.
