I tried the suggestions above, but still no help.
I have windwos Vista and I am simply trying to convert a cassette tape via jack-jack cable in headphone port into Audacity, so I can burn the audio to a CD. However, I get the same error message-no matter what I do. I also downloaded the newer version, and I still get the message. I've tried more than one cassette player, and still get error.

I hope you can help, as this is very frustrating. The guy on youtube made it look so simple

It IS simple, once you know how to do it on your system. The difficult bit is that computers are different (different sound cards and different configurations). As with everyone else that has asked about this, we need to know the details about your set-up. As you have already been through the other posts in this topic you should will no doubt have all the details at your finger tips.

What are the default recording and playback devices that are set in the Sounds section of the Windows Control Panel?
What is set in the "Properties" for these devices?
What options do you have set in "Edit menu > references > Devices" and "Edit menu > references > Quality"?

Playback in sound/control panel says: Realtek high def audio speakers
Recording says: Front Mic-Realtek high def audio-not plugged in
Microphone-Realtek-not plugged in
Line in-Realtek-not plugged in
Properties:
Playback: sound, video & game controllers
Location: 2(high def audio bus)
Version: 6.0.1.5408
Recordings: same as above

Edit,preferences,device: Host: MME
Playback/device: speakers (realtek)
Recording/device: no device found & no options listed
Channels: 1(mono)
edit,preferences,quality: Sample rate: 8000 Hz
Format: 16-bit
converter: fast sinc interpolation

That's the problem.
Windows does not recognise any available recording input, which means that there is no recording input available for Audacity.
This is confirmed by:

Check the lead from the cassette tape to the computer. The lead needs to be plugged into the "Line In" socket.
If this is a full size computer, look on the back of the computer for a Line In socket. (sockets on the front are not always connected, and if they are they are usually just microphone inputs, not "Line" inputs.

Yipppie!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it worked. I pluged it in from the back in the line in plug. Now cross my fingers, hopefully I can burn it with no problems,lol. Thank you so much for your help-very appreciated!

The following worked for me: "Transport" -> "Rescan Audio Devices" Then in the "output device" drop down (marked with a speaker icon) I changed to "Microsoft Sound Mapper". This removed the error!
Configuration -> Lenovo PC with Windows 7 Professional with Realtek built-in audio.

Audacity 1.2.x does not have "Transport" -> "Rescan Audio Devices". That's in recent versions of Audacity 1.3.x only.
