New user needs help please!

Hi there, this is probably a really obvious question I have, but I can't get any music from my cd player onto the program. When I press record, I get a continuous line and hear nothing.
I am using windows XP. I have tried the cd setting and all the others; aux etc.I've tried changing the program sample rate (it is currently on 44100) but no joy.
Can you help please?

we need complete details of how you connect everythign up
and how you use it to make a recording

did you play music from your cd player?
did you pick it up with a microphone from speakers

or do you use a cable connected to line in on your sound card?
did you select line in with audacity?

is your sound card set up correctly?

where are these settings you tried?
realtek or windows option page?
in audacity edit>preferences>....
somewhere else??

identify all of them and where you set them.
so we have some clues to work with

I'm playing music from the cd player, using a cable to connect to an "Ion" USB Audio Input, and from that into the pUSB port on the computer.
I have selected Line In.
The settings that I tried are on the main control panel of Audacity.

I haven't checked any sound card set up.

You should select the USB turntable in your Windows setup panels. Line-In is the analog stereo connection, not the digital USB connection.

The computer has to be happy with the connection before Audacity has a chance. Audacity always uses the computer's own sound services. Is there a switch on the turntable to force it to pay attention to the tape machine instead of its own phonograph.

Why are you bothering to record the CD - you would do much better to rip a set of WAV files from the CD and then load those into Audacity for editing.

The only CD I ever had to record with Audacity was one that had the infuriating DRM copy protection on it!

On a PC, you can use cdex ripper to convert your Music CD directly to WAV files.

Yea thanks guys, but I'm trying to voice over the cd whilst copying it, that's why I've not just burnt it.
I've installed audacity onto my laptop and it's working fine. Tried re-installing onto the pc but still have the same problem.

"Rip" the track(s) you require from the CD first.
"Import" the ripped WAV file into Audacity (Audacity 1.2.6 = "Project" menu. Audacity 1.3.11 = "File" menu)
Then record your voice track while playing the CD track in Audacity.
Multi-track projects are a lot easier to handle in Audacity 1.3 than in 1.2, so I'd recommend upgrading.
