Static in audacity 1.2.6

I use audacity to record my voice with my Rock Band microphone, and a few days ago it worked just fine for recording for 20+ minutes etc. Just today I went to record some more, and at random times I get big sessions of static when recording. The static seems to come up randomly while I'm recording, and is really annoying. It looks something like the attached picture. This morning I dropped my microphone, and it made a small dent, but I would think that rock band microphones are sturdy and that a small dent wouldn't affect it very much. Can anyone help me solve this issue? Thanks.
(Also I have restarted my computer several times, that's not the issue unfortunately.)

This is usually a sign of a bad USB connection, or it can happen if you are using a USB hub with other devices connected as well as the mic.
Make sure the mic is plugged directly into a USB port on the computer, not through a hub. If it is already directly connected, try a different USB port, and check that the connection is secure.
Dropping the mic probably didn't do it any good, but did you have the problem before you dropped it?

There were no problems before I dropped it, and the only thing plugged in with it the other day was my capture device, a dazzle. This morning I had a 360 controller plugged in too, and I thought that was the problem at first, but unplugging it didn't help.

I have a USB microphone with a USB socket on the bottom. Could the socket have become damaged?

This is the $11 microphone, right? Even actual rock concerts have people who take care of the microphones and repair or replace ones that fail (or are crushed by the band). Microphones are pretty delicate inside there. You may have damaged something. There are very few microphones that continue to work well with a dented windscreen.

It's a small dent on the handle of the microphone, the top doesn't seem damaged; although I could have hit something in there, I doubt it.

you would be wrong about the mike
small dents can make a difference
could be loose connection inside causing the noise
try a new mike
then if the same problem
ask again
