Audio track shrunk after pasting

This is pretty much the first time I'm using Audacity, so I have no idea what's going on with it. I was trying to combine two audio tracks so that they would play together, and when I copied one track from one Audacity window to paste into another, the audio track was contracted to about 1 minute long when it was more like around 2 minutes. Incidentally, the pitch also went higher. Anyone know why this happened and how to fix it?

The problem is probably that you were pasting a track at one sample rate into a track that was at a different sample rate which is not supported in Audacity 1.2
This is supported in Audacity 1.3.11 and I would recommend upgrading to this version.
There is a better way to combine tracks that does not require having multiple Audacity Windows open at the same time.
I presume that one (or both) of these tracks is an existing audio file?
If you simply "Import" the files into Audacity, each imported file will become a new track. When you play or Export, these tracks are mixed together. You can adjust the start time of each track by dragging the track with the "Time Shift" tool (double headed arrow).
