Problem Recording Sound from Speakers

Ok, I've looked all day for a way to record the sound from my speakers but everything has failed so far. Basically, I want to record videos of myself playing PC games, and I'd like to record sound from my speakers and be able to talk to my friends on the microphone at the same time. However, so far I am ONLY interested in recording the sound from my speakers, or should I say my headset, and I am not interested in recording my microphone, I would only like to be able to talk to my friends on it. That being said, my soundcard is a Realtek HD of some sorts and it is onboard my motherboard. The bar to select stereo mix or something on audacity is grayed out, so I can't choose that, and I'm just looking for options to record what I am hearing, which would be the sound effects coming from my game.

I think I am on to something though. Whenever I try to record from my sound, I see something happening on the line that moves around when you record, its very faint and you can't even hear it, but I think it IS working. The problem is that whenever I try to move the microphone slider to the right, it always goes back all the way to the left and mutes my sound. Is there any way I could fix this?

Sorry for the long post, it's been so frustrating and I think there MUST be something I'm doing wrong, maybe it's just my headset or something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If your computer supports it, you can activate recording from Mix-Out. This is the classic way to record what your computer is playing. This also soaks up both sound pathways in your computer leaving nothing for other services.

The opposite of that is a machine set up to Skype or other communication service that causes Audacity to either drop dead or record the wrong thing. Audacity is a really simple program and it likes running on very simple machines.

I usually have skype running in the background, and it starts up with windows, but I don't know if that is the problem, because I closed skype and it still didnt work.

I'm still wondering about that problem where I can never move the microphone slider to the right without muting my sound. Any suggestions for that?

EDIT: The mixer toolbar is not grayed out if I go into preferences and set Realtek Audio HD input as my recording device, HOWEVER it will not let me select stereo mix. Instead, I see the option for stereo mix, but if I choose it it just goes back to CD Volume. Any suggestions on this?

You may need to restart the computer after you kill off Skype. Skype viciously reassigns sound pathways to suit itself and it doesn't like to give them up and it's not negotiable.

If you mean the input or mic volume control in Audacity, that could be responding to the Windows Control Panel settings and guess who's controlling those?

People trying to manage around Skype find that Pamela Professional and Pamela Business software can be installed to record both sides of the performance without interference. In Windows, there's another program that can be used, too.

After you capture the performance, then you can save a WAV file and edit it in Audacity -- and I would be using Audacity 1.3, not 1.2. Development and support on Audacity 1.2 stopped a long time ago. You can install both safely, but only use one at a time. Audacity 1.3 projects will not open in 1.2.

Total Recorder can be configured to record both sides... but I swear there was another one..
