Re: Unable to record
Wow, I am having a very similar problem I think. I'm running Windows XP SP2. When I began with audacity, it worked fine. Plug in the mic and record. Then, I had a problem with my pc, and had it reformatted. The next time I tried to record, it no longer would record anything. I did a hardware test, and it didn't pic up a mic. THe sound recorder doesn't pick up anything either.
I finally got my USB headset mic to make some noise, so to speak. However, there is a like a second delay, and a really strong slow echo. Just odd. Maybe I have a driver or sound card problem??

Re: Unable to record
Received the reply from MSI Support (Taiwan) this morning( see below). they were very quick but not so helpful and rather obvious. They either know that this drastic action will cure the problem, (although they do invite me to report back), or this is standard reply no. '5a'. The latter I fear. I don't think they even read my detailed submission as I clearly stated I had the latest drivers. I am not inclined to rush into a format and re-install of Windows XP as I have spent the past three months doing the opposite, sorting out a new install and am only now happy that my system is as I want it, except for the current problem of course.
Thanks for contacting MSI Technical Support.
My dear friend, please re-install your OS and make sure your OS is Windows XP+SP2 to try again. After installing all your MB'drivers, please enter Device Manager to check whether there is "!"or"?".We will wait your reply.
You can download 7345-110'drivers from MSI Website.
Best wishes

Re: Unable to record
Looks like a standard reply to me, but seems to indicate that it's not a "known problem" on this board.
You probably don't have as much old computer junk lying around as I do, but if you do have an old hard drive anywhere, you could try disconnecting your main hard drive, temporarily connecting a "spare" one and do a clean install on that (with the 7345-110'drivers from MSI Website).
If the drivers that you have tried are the "7345-110'drivers from MSI Website", you could get back to them and say that you've tried these drivers and still have the same problem.

Re: Unable to record
If I give them the benefit of the doubt then maybe they know there is a problem, hence the new drivers and that the fail safe way is to do a fresh install of Windows and then load the drivers, but, they don't say that, so it could be a 'go away' message. I do have a spare hard drive as it so happens but I think an easier route might be to make a drive image of Windows Vista and then delete the partition and install Windows XP to the clean partition. If it proves the point then I can take a drive image of this and replace my main installation and re-install all my programs. If it doesn't solve the problem then I can use the drive image of 'Vista' to get me back to where I started. On the other hand I could leave things as they are and use 'Vista' if i need to use the record function and live with the problem on XP until I am forced by a more compelling reason to re-format.
The Internet seems to be full of people with the same problem, all looking for a 'fix', which is not there.

Re: Unable to record
Good luck with it. I look forward to hearing how you get on.

Thank you for all your support on this issue, you have been great. I will certainly let you know the outcome but it might be a little while yet.
Re: Unable to record
As promised Iam returning to post an update. I installed a 'fresh' version of Windows XP today on a separate partition of my hard drive and the only thing I did was to install the latest drivers for the Realtek Audio. On checking thereafter I discovered that the problem was still there, in other words I still could not get any options to record audio or even microphone imput. All functions were 'greyed out'. So, where does that leave me, well, I had sound recording working ok with Windows Vista installed on the same partition and using the same motherboard etc etc., so does this mean the sound chip is ok and the motherboard is ok , therefore it must be Windows XP?. I am at a loss and totally bemused, any suggestion most welcome.
Re: Unable to record
I thought I should update this posting to take account of recent developments. i managed to invoke the interest of MSI buy way of their new Global Forum, this is good because it is monitored by MSI people and they are very quick to respond. My problem is still with me but of course I can now get all the recording options in Windows Vista but since XP is my system of choice and the one i use every day I would prefer to use this. MSI have acknowledged that the greyed-out record options are a known problem with this Realtek Audio Chip in Windows XP but they suggested that recording in Audacity was still possible if the preferences were set to 'Microsoft Sound Mapper'
I did this but it did not work, they then claimed that they had this set up on their own system and it was working. Further investigation revealed that they were not using the exact same Motherboard/audio Chip combination as me. They have now invited other Forum members who do have the same set-up as me to make a contribution. We shall see what happens but I have my doubts.
You might like to look in on my posting in this Forum as it has good comments and good screen-shots which illustrate the problem.

I am still open to suggestions on this one.

Re: Unable to record
Thanks for the update jaycup, it certainly looks like an issue with the XP driver for your mobo/sound chip.
I noticed in one of your posts:http://forum.msi.com.tw/index.php?PHPSE ... #msg858383
I don't see a post saying what the settings were that you were using ("using audacity as per your settings ") - if you have these written down, could you post them here.
Do you have a control panel that looks like this?

If so, do you get any options when you click on the little arrow shown here:

So you did manage to record with Audacity in XP (once)?I ignored the greyed out options and tried to record some radio audio (BBC) using audacity as per your settings and it worked but I have not been able to repeat it since I get a straight line recording wave and no playback.
