I created a ringtone from an mp3 file, but it came out too quiet. I had noticed that the original mp3 file seemed too quiet, but it's kind of noisy in the room I'm in (unfortunately, I can't do anything about that at the moment), so I thought I just couldn't hear it because it's noisy. But when I sent it to my phone, it was quieter than other ringtones, so now I'm convinced that the problem is in the original file.
I followed the instructions for making a ringtone at the Audacity Wiki, including the Equalizer instructions that supposedly would make the ringtone louder.
Is there a way to increase the volume of an mp3 in Audacity?

Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Re: How to Increase Volume?
Before exporting to MP3 - select the whole project with CTRL+A - and then use Effect > Amplify - Audacity will calculate a default based on the loudest it can go without clipping, so jus accept the default. Then do the MP3 export.
But if you have load bits and softer bits - then you may need a compressor rather that the amplify effect. Chris's Compressor is one that gets recommended a lot on the forum. Use the Search function of the forum to look for threads referring to it.

Chris's Compressor
http://pdf23ds.net/software/dynamic-compressor/
His claim to fame is the ability to increase the loudness and density of the show without seeming to do anything else to it. No small trick.

Re: How to Increase Volume?
I did use the Compressor based on the suggestions on the Wiki page I linked above when I originally made the ringtone and that didn't seem to make it loud enough.
I've installed the Dynamic Compressor plug-in but I couldn't find any info on that page that described how to set the variables for a ringtone, so I'm not sure how to use it. Using the default values had no effect.
As for Amplify, the defaults are both 0.0. I tried setting them to various values up to 20.0 and couldn't hear any difference when I previewed it.
So basically, my problem with the Compressor, Dynamic Compressor, and Amplify is that I don't know what numbers to use and the default values don't change anything.
Any ideas about what numbers to plug in?

Re: How to Increase Volume?
When you play your ringtone, do the green volume meters go most of the way up to "0" and kind of bounce up there? How about the blue waves on the timeline? Are they most of the way up to "1" without touching it?
It's suspicious that none of those tools had any effect.
I can understand why Normalize and Amplify may not do anything. They're pretty simple. If any of those blue waves and spikes in your show goes up to 1 anywhere in the performance, that the end of those tools. That's all they do.
I'm not a fan of Compressor. It's too easy to create damage with that one. But Chris's Compressor should have had a pretty dramatic effect. Edit > Select > All. Effect > Compress Dynamics (change the first number, compression to .8 from .5 > OK.
You should see a little progress bar however briefly. If the tool just flashes once, it probably didn't do anything. I've had that happen a couple of times.
If all else fails, step up to Audacity 1.3.11. Audacity 1.3 has much better tools and ease of use. You can have 1.2 and 1.3 on your machine as long as you only use one at a time. Audacity 1.3 projects will not open in 1.2.
Try this. Apply Leveler to the clip (Heaviest, -60 noise) and then Normalize (0.0dB). You don't have to Edit > Select > All in Audacity 1.3. It's automatic.

Re: How to Increase Volume?
Well, I'm not sure what I did wrong before, but after I tried your suggestions (just the 1.2 ones) and they didn't work, I decided to start over from scratch. Trimming it again just right was the hardest part, but then I just did the Dynamic Compression and I think I also did Normalize, and that was it. The original mp3 was very quiet but DC made it louder.
So I finally have my ringtone! The bad part is that I've heard that music so many times already after testing it again and again that I'm not sure I can bear to hear it again as my ringtone!
Anyway, thanks very much for the advice!

Well at least you have the process nailed now - so can use any other tune you choose ....
