Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Hi, I'm not sure what you guys were getting at with the label export text files.

I did stumble on this direction:

I really figured out how to accurately pull the right sound intervals out this time. I've labeled my sounds with the Sound Finder, then Edit > Labels > Split Cut, Tracks > Add New > Audio Track, Paste my cut labels.

Now, I'm left with a new audio track that contains only the audio I'm interested in. Problem is, the audio is split with gaps (see attached picture). How can I bring the all the samples together in one continuous track?

As I understood your original post, you wanted to measure the time lag between the original stimulus and the response.

Is this still what you want to do? If it is, then all the information will be available in the label file, as Steve outlined. If not, what exactly is the object of the exercise?

Ah now I see where you were going with the label export text files. That would be an excellent tool, given I had a method for getting exact labels at the stimulus and responses only. Guess I'll get back to doing just that. Thank you!

Still, I would like to know how to pull those gaps together if there's an easy way (see my last post)

Effect > Truncate Silence will do that for you.

See this from the manual http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... te_Silence

You may need to "Join" the audio clips together before using "Truncate Silence".
To join the clips, select the entire track (click below the track name, taking care not to move the volume or pan sliders) then press Ctrl+J

I'm not sure if it's a bug or just a weird behaviour, but Truncate silence does strange things on my machine if the audio clips are detached from each other. (Audacity 1.3.11 on Linux)

Alright, I had a revelation today on a new way this issue could be approached.

The stimulus played through the speakers is generated from the computer that is doing the voice recording.

In an effort to isolate the subject's voice responses, I'd like to use a traditional headset with a directional microphone. Problem is, this would likely not pick up auditory stimuli played through the speakers. Recall it is necessary to have this in the audio recording so I can calculate reaction times.

SO, I'm thinking it would be awesome if Audacity could simultaneously record from two different sources. Would it be possible to have Audacity record directly from the soundcard for one track, and from the microphone input for another? Conceptually, this sounds like a very clean method to isolate the only two sounds I'm concerned with.

If not, I'll start playing with stereo Y-jacks and looping soundcard output back into the line-in along with the microphone.

Thanks!

How about having the stimuli recorded onto one track in Audacity and recording the response on another track? That type of thing is done all the time by musicians making multi-track recordings. The method is similar to this: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Creat ... h_Audacity

For accurate results you will need to use Audacity 1.3.11 and set up the "latency correction" http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... tency_Test
