Recording streaming audio problem

Hello.
I am using vista 32bit. Audacity seems properly installed and works fine except when I'm trying to record audio playing on my computer. The first half second or so of the recording is loud and sounds very low quality, then the next two seconds or so sound fine, then after that everything is recorded to be very quiet and sounds very low quality. I'm baffled.
Thanks for reading.

Audio that likes to adjust itself can usually be laid at the feet of the computer trying to do sound management as if you were doing a Skype phone call or other communications service.
I'm going to dig in the tips and tutorials to see if anyone addressed this formally yet, but the short answer is you need to root around in the Windows Control Panels - Audio and turn off anything that has "auto" or "echo" in the name.
Windows Control Panel

A Windows Elf should be along shortly to fill in the gaps. I've never heard of this happening to internet recordings before, but the footprints of the problem are pretty clear.

Thank you. That solved the problem. What I did was:
Control Panel --> Smart Audio (I presume this is to do with my soundcard rather than a general windows thing)
Then selected no microphone enhancement.
Cheers.

Yes that's a custom sound card thing - there are hundreds of variations on this theme making it one of our biggest headaches on the forum.
