Audacity Forum

Using v1.2.4 with no problems. Only using it to save extensive vinyl collection to disc so not using all of its capabilities. No problems until purchased new pc that has Vista on it. Everything I record now is in Mono. All previous stuff still in stereo. Setting on audacity, when recording, says Stereo. What am I doing wrong? Can anyone help.

The latest 1.3.x version of Audacity is recommended for use with Vista.

There should be a setting in the Windows Control Panel for setting recording to mono/stereo. Sorry I can't be more specific but I don't use Windows much.

Daddio, I had the same problem with my Vista program and Audacity v1.2.6. If you're using a sound card, make sure it's plugged into USB port 1st. Then go into control panel and click on your sound program icon. In your sound program window, click on the recording tab. You should have a microphone(USB codec) icon that you can click on. When you do that a new window will come up. Click on its properties tab, then click on "Advanced". In the "Advanced" window you will see a pull down box that contains dozens of choices. You should select the "2 channel" choice that's appropriate. I use "2 Channel, 16 bit, 44100Hz. This switch should have been flipped automatically when you selected these choices under preferrences in the Audacity program; but of course nothing happens as it should with Vista! I found this fix to be permanent. I did not have to go back and redo before each Audacity session or powering off of my computer. Hope it works for you.
Perhaps you could help me with a problem. I've seen this problem discussed under a different verson of Audacity. My Audacity program "remaining hours" meter keeps lowering along with my laptop C hardrive available space despite the fact that I keep trashing all of the Audacity files after I burn the WAV files onto a disc. I empty trash. I perform disc clean ops. The 2 programs are not shaking hands enough to let one another know what's going on I? I have lost 30 gig of hard drive availability so far! How can I recover that space, and how can I avoid this problem in the future? I saw something about the Audacity directory under the edit preferrences, but I didn't understand what to do.
Any help out there?

Audacity is supposed to be cleaning up after itself, but that may be an Audacity 1.2 thing.

Edit > Preferences > Directories

That's the location where Audacity puts things while it's thinking about them. It's a directory that's intentionally difficult to reach, but that's where some of your drive space may be hiding.

Upgrade to Audacity 1.3.11. You can have both on your machine safely as long as you only use one at a time. Audacity 1.3 Projects will not open in 1.2.

I have unhidden all files on my c & d drives. I count approximately 30gigs of space consumed. I did a disc scan last night. Vista thinks there are 60 gigs of files on drive c! There are still another 30gigs of files that are unaccounted for that I'm not able to view or delete. I'm pretty sure this is a Vista vs. Audacity problem! Any ideas of how to get at the missing files?

I don't know if I would "key anything in." Click on Edit, click on Preferences, Click on Directories. It should tell you where it is right now.

Windows is renowned for eating hard drive space and each new version gets more hungry than the last. (I have a complete Linux installation that fits happily on a 4GB USB stick, including programs and 2GB of data).

Among other things Windows will "steal" disk space for "Restore Points" and some versions (Ultimate, Business, and Enterprise editions) will also eat space with "Shadow Copies".

Ran the WinDirStat program. It shows me that I have 30GB of C: that is labeled "Unknown". This came about from me manually deleting Audacity v1.2.6 files and not letting it clean up after itself. I believe this/these unknown file(s) grow in size as I delete segments of tracks, (using my delete key), that I am currently working on within the program. I understand that I can try a newer version of the program to avoid these problems in the future, but I'm still looking for a way to regain the 30GB of C: that I've lost. I renamed the temp directory and have it sitting on my desktop. Therefore I have lost the name of the original temp file dirctory that contained these "unknown" files. Is there no way now to gain access?
