Default .VOX sample rate

Apologies if this has been asked before but I couldn't find anything.
I'm using Audacity 1.2.6 and have a VERY large number of .VOX files recorded I assume at 6000Hz
When I start up Audacity and load the file it defaults to 8000 and I have to remember to reset it to 6000
Is there any way I can change it to default to 6000
Thanks

Audacity project sample rate will always default or change to the sample rate of the first clip. If the rate switches to 8000 when you load the first clip, then the clip was recorded at 8000.

But if I leave it at 8000 voices sound like Mickey Mouse but at 6000 they sound normal
Could it be another setting that needs changing perhaps or could the information on the .VOX be wrong?
I didn't record them myself but we have approx 400GB of tracks so don't want to reformat them!!

It's possible but I would guess that it is a limitation (bug) in Audacity that is reading them incorrectly. 6000Hz is an unusual sample rate so if it is a bug it does not surprise me that we have not heard of this before. Audacity 1.2.6 is the end of the line for the 1.2.x series and is no longer being developed so if it is a bug it's not going to get fixed.
Try using Audacity 1.3.11 and see if that imports them correctly. You can have both versions installed so there's no need to uninstall 1.2.6
One limitation - Audacity 1.2.6 cannot open projects that have been saved by Audacity 1.3.x

Just downloaded 1.3.11 and am running it under Windows 7
Using same .VOX files it now refuses to open it saying unrecognised format and suggesting use import raw data.
Can then import it ok but have to set up VOX format and 6000Hz rate and then it sounds fine but now takes longer to open each file!

Right. So the sound is in a compressed format that Audacity doesn't understand, which is why 1.2 didn't exactly know what to do either. You can try to convert all your files into WAV with Super or Switch (download). One or the other or both may have a batch mode. Audacity is a terrible converter and depends on all of its music to arrive in good shape every time.

There is something strange here -

Audacity 1.2.6 does not support VOX (Dialogic ADPCM format).
VOX files are probably supported by Audacity 1.3.11 but you need to have FFMpeg installed.

If Audacity 1.2.6 was able to open these files, they are probably not in VOX format, which will confuse Audacity 1.3.11 and you will need to find out what format they really are. SUPER by erightsoft (free) can tell you this.
