HP a1606n Windows XP home. OK I'm all set, downloaded, preferences according to the input device, output is the problem. I get sound when recording, which is how I set it up. The problem is, my computer will not give me sound when I try to play anything else, ie. other music, games, DVD etc. How do I set up in preferences to accomplish both tasks without a bunch of messing around?

Re: No sound
It's not Audacity Preferences. Chances are really good that your Windows Control Panel is set wrong.
Windows Control Panel

Audacity always gets blamed for this, but other things are much more likely to mess things up. Do you run Skype? Classic problems with sound routing. Do you like to record from the internet? You need an odd Windows panel setup for that. etc.
Do you have a USB microphone? Unplug it and see if everything comes back to normal.
