buzz in recording on netbook

hey all i just loaded 1.2.6 on an Acer netbook......when i plug my mic into the mic jack and then record, there's a buzz and it doesn't pick up the room too well......on my other pc (very old) it does just fine....any ideas?

Are you using an internal microphone?

no i am plugging my shure sm58 direction into the mic jack on the netbook (via a reducer cord - from xlr to 1/8")

when i use the netbook's internal mic it comes thru very strong w/o buzz

laptop/netbook mic sockets are not designed to work with that sort of microphone - sometimes they will work a bit and sometimes they buzz really badly. They rarely work well. A better solution is to use an external (USB) microphone pre-amp, though that will cost a bit of money.
