Hi, since I have installed Audacity on my Windows Vista machine I have not been able to get any audio output from any of my applications such as Media Player and Itunes. When I go into the sound option in the control panel i can see that the speakers are active and the meter is registering when I play something but I get no output thru my speakers. I do get output thru my speakers when I used Audacity. Does the install override something that I need to reset. Can anyone help or have any suggestions? Thanks...

Go back to the control panel and on the "Playback" tab, select the sound device your speakers are plugged into. If you were using a USB device to record from, it may have set your playback device to itself, then you will hear no sound.

i actually just found a post in another thread that said to unplug any USB device from the input. I had a USB turntable which I unplugged and that cleared the problem. Thanks..

the basic problem is that USB devices tend to take over the whole sound - both input and output - and obviously your USB TT doesn't have speakers for playback.
Galeandrews post relates to this - you need to tell Audacity to direct it's output to your PC's soundcard. Go to Edit>Preferences>Audio I/O and set the Playback Device to your soundcard. You may need to stop and restart Audacity for the change to take effect.
