Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Line-In Grayed Out, No Input On One Channel

Post by car2oon » Tue Jan 08, 2008 12:29 am

Great program, now if I can only get it to work. Objective: Vinyl to CD. Equipment : Windows XP, Audacity 1.2.6, Dual turntable (at least 15 years old) into a Pioneer SX-7 Stereo Receiver (Phono Input), output (Rec/Out) RCA to 1/8" input on computer. First, I can not get to the Line-In since the drop box is grayed out. Second, only one channel is showing a wave form during record. The other channel is pretty much a straight line. Any help to fix the problem would be very helpful.
Thanks-car2oon

How do you know there's only one channel if you can't reach Line-In?

Audacity wakes up from first birthday in Mono. Reset to stereo under Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O.

Even before you connect the turntable (system), open everything up and click once inside Audacity's red record meters. The meters are now armed and will show you levels without going into full-on record. Pick up each one of the RCA cables going into the computer and touch one center pin and then the other. Each Audacity meter should light up with buzz and hum from your skin.

Connect the turntable (system) and play a record. If both channels don't light up, there's something wrong with the turntable (system). You proved the computer and Audacity are fine with the touch test.

Don't worry about listening to it. That's a different problem.

One more. Sometimes, Audacity will need you to restart before changes take affect. Restart after serious changes anyway.

Excellent first post, you just crossed 4 questions we were going to have to ask you off the list.

One more thing to look out for: Are you sure that's a Line In you've plugged into? If it's a Mic In (often colored pink, but not always) then it's a mono input and you'll never be able to get a second channel out of it.

I'm not sure if you're aware, but in order to change the inputs the edit -> preferences -> audio i/o menu is the most foolproof way of doing that. If Line In isn't listed in that menu, then you'll need to make sure you actually have that input. Many laptops only have a Mic In.
