Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Portion of silence automatically appended in Wav-file.

Post by Keltex » Sun Jan 06, 2008 2:45 pm

After I have adjusted a sound effect in Audacity I want to make a wav-file. I do the Export As Wav... in the File menu, and then I discover that some 3-4 seconds of silence is automatically appended at the end of the wav-file. How do I avoid that extra silence?

One of the ways to discover what's really happening in the face of really oddball symptoms is to make them worse. What happens if you intentionally put tone from the generator on the end of your show and then export? Then take the tone off and export again.

If you're changing the sample rate, then this always happens. Sample Rate changes (when done during export) always add some silence to a file. This is a known bug.

If you're not changing the sample rate, then I have no idea what's going on.

Hello Koz and Alatham,

Thank you for your interest in this matter.

Your suggestion led me to observe closely how Audacity behaved on export to Wav.
I tested on various sources of sound effects that all was imported from wav-files, some with stereo tracks and some with only mono.
First I got confused because some times Audacity did not add an extra portion to the exported wav-file at all.

And you are right, Alatham. I just saw your post when I already had made the tests.

However here is what I found out:

1. The imported source has a mono track, 44100Hz, 16-bit:
1.a. Exporting from unchanged project, the resulting wav-file has no extra portion added.
1.b. Tone added at end of track, the resulting wav-file has no extra portion added.
1.c. Stereo track, 44100Hz, 16-bit, is added, the exported wav-file has no extra portion added.
1.d. Adding a stereo track with rate other than 44100 Hz will in the exported wav-fil put an extra portion of silence at the end. The size of the extension can vary, some times only 1 sec., some times more.

Apparently adding a stereo track with rate other than in the original track will cause Audacity lengthen the exported wav-file.

2. The imported source has a stereo track:
2.a. After exporting, the wav-file is not extended regardless if there is generated a tone or not.
2.b. If the rate is altered then after export, the resulting wav-file gets a long extension, 8-9 secs.

The reason I came over this problem at the start was that I used an elderly version of a burning program which required stereo tracks (44100/16-bit) in order to burn tracks to CDs. Now I have got a newer burning program which apparently does not need stereo tracks to burn.
