Menu bar only displays ??? instead of items

Hello.
Ever since I installed Audacity the menu bar only displays ??? instead of for instance Effect.
The drop down that shows up also contains ??? instead of menu items.
At first I thought it was because I had a beta version, but after uninstalling the beta and installing a stable version the problem is the same.
The same goes for older versions.
I've been very careful uninstalling one version before installing another.

you've probably got the wrong language installed in Audacity - I assume that because of your excellent English (no need to apologize - yours is better than some of the native speakers on this board ....) you want the English installation.

Go to Edit/Preferences (these may be scrambled too - the Edit is the second selection in from the left in the bar near the top of the Audacity Window - and Preferences is at the bottom of the drop-down selection. Then you will need the Interface tab, which is the 6th tab in from the left. In the midddle of that dialogue box there should be a drop-down selector - use this to select English.
