a good idea?

Post by schnahz » Sat Jan 30, 2010 1:09 am

Hi all,
I decided that I need to hang around this forum because learning how to record and edit is important to me and there is so much I don't know. Because what I love to record is language [foreign and domestic]I went to the international forum to see if I could kill two birds at one time, that is, learn about audacity and practice Spanish at the same time. Sadly I found that here on the English speaking forum we are livin' high because if you post on the Spanish speaking forum you may easily wait a month and still not have an answer. So I said to myself why not try and translate someone's question into English and then when the answer comes through translate it back to Spanish. I hope this will meet with approval because I think I would enjoy putting my hard won skills to use. Here goes:

Baleoj pregunta:

Baleoj asks:

I opened some ogg files with audacity and exported them as mp3.Then I opened the mp3 files, edited them and saved the projects.then I opened the edited mp3 projects, I wanted to export them again as mp3. But they were exported as mp3 WITHOUT THE EDITS.Does anybody know what it could be.I already tried select, and export selection, etc. and the same thing happened.

I think my translation presents the basic problem but I'd be grateful for improvements.

Sounds like a good and generous idea. It would probably be helpful if you posted the link to the original question as that would help us to keep an overview of how this experiment is going, and would be particularly useful in cases where screenshots or attachments are involved. For example, to post the link for the question by Baleoj you would just copy the web address of that page and paste it into your post like this:
http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=19160

Some information is essential, and you can probably deal with this bit on your own before you post on the English language part of the forum.

What is their operating system? (example Windows Vista)

What version of Audacity are they using? (example Audacity 1.3.10 - this information is in the Audacity Help menu in "About Audacity")

If they are recording, what are they recording from? Microphone - what sort (USB microphone, Condenser microphone with microphone pre-amp connected to the Line-in socket of their sound card, computer microphone plugged into the Mic socket......)
Are they trying to record sounds that are playing on their computer? (Stereo Mix)
Are they recording from a turntable? If so, what sort? In particular, is it USB and if not how is it connected?

Is there question covered in any of these pages?
http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=3507
http://audacityteam.org/help/faq
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Tips
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Tutorials

More information is better. If you do not have a clear picture of what they are doing, then we will probably not have a clear idea either and may not be able to offer any useful response.

(these cover about 90% of the questions that appear on the English language forum. When you have been through that lot a few times you will be well on your way to becoming an expert user. ;) )

I'm reading this literally and it seems a bit confused.
1) I opened some ogg files with audacity and exported them as mp3.
At this stage, there are some Ogg files, and direct (unedited) MP3 format copies of the Ogg files.

2) Then I opened the mp3 files, edited them and saved the projects.
Now there are Ogg files, the unedited MP3 files and an Audacity Project (.AUP files and data folder)

3) then I opened the edited mp3 projects,
Does this mean the Project that was saved in step 2?

4) I wanted to export them again as mp3. But they were exported as mp3 WITHOUT THE EDITS.
Which were without the edits? Have the edits been lost from the project created in step 2, or does this mean that the MP3s created in step 1 have no edits? :?

Also, what was the purpose of step 1? Ogg and MP3 formats are "lossy" compressed formats. Each time audio is encoded into a lossy format, there is a deterioration (loss) of sound quality. The original Ogg files would have lost a little bit of sound quality when they were first encoded. Re-encoding them as MP3 will increase the damage (more loss of sound quality). Each time the audio is re-encoded, the damage increases. To maintain the best sound quality, the original files should be edited and encoding into a lossy format should only be done as the final step. Ogg and MP3 are good formats for delivering audio when small file size is important, but during production the audio should be kept in an uncompressed format.

Audacity works entirely with uncompressed audio. When you import an Ogg or MP3 file, the file is decoded and exists in the Audacity Project as uncompressed audio data.
An explanation of how Audacity handles files is given here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/File_Management_Tips
(this is one of the most important bits of information for new users - do you fancy translating it?)

There are plenty of opportunities for people with translating skills - see here: http://audacityteam.org/community/translation

Thanks for the help Stevethefiddle. I'd love to translate http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/File_Management_Tips I'll work on it in increments until I get it done.

Hi Schnahz,

Thanks for helping with getting questions answered on the Spanish Forum. Like Steve said, I'm sure you'll be able to answer some of the questions there yourself in time. I've got one other suggestion - if you translate a question from the Spanish Forum and post it here, reply to the poster telling them you are trying to find an answer and giving them a link to the topic that you started here.

Very little of the Wiki has been translated to other languages, so there is no agreed system for the format of the web address we use, and how pages are named. Also there is some possibility on the Wiki that pages will be created in a non-English language that have no English equivalent page. So I think probably the best plan is to write the address so the page title follows "Es/", and call the title whatever is the best translation in Spanish. So if you thought "Consejos de administración de archivos" was a good translation of "File Management Tips", click this link:

http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... ction=edit

replace "New" in the address bar with "Es/Consejos de administración de archivos" (without quotes) and hit ENTER.

Probably you want to copy in a section at a time from the English version so as to translate it, but do whatever is convenient. If you have any problems, please leave a note on the discussion tab of the English page and someone will help.

Thanks

Gale

Reason: clarify page title should be preceded by "Es"
