OK! I conected the CD/Tape output on the mixer to the CD input on thr Crate - no sound coming through the speaker. So, I gather that the output on the mixer is the problem? The LEDs light upu but no sound . . .
Guess I'll get in touch with Behringer and see if repairs can be made. Might cost more than the mixer, but then that will be how it is. I truly appreciate all your help and when I get the mixer straight, I'll get back and let you know how it comes out. I'll probably have more questions.
I got a Guinness here with your name on it, whenever you're next in Colorado!

That looks like it.

However, before you spend money on repairs, there is an alternative you could try.

There is a headphone output on the mixer, marked PHONES/CTRL, which you can use to connect to the NADY instead of the CD/Tape Output. It also has its own level control which allows you to set the recording level going into Audacity. You will need a cable with a 1/4" stereo jack plug on one end, and two RCA sockets on the other, which may not be easy to find, but it should be cheaper than getting the mixer repaired.

Hey, PO'L, I'm back! Took me a minute, but I've got a 1/4 in" jack coming off the headphones port on the mixer with female RCA plugs on the other end, connected to the NADY, to the USB port on the computer, and I'm actually getting some sound coming through. Emphasis on the "some sound". Voice sounds like a bee buzing inside a jar, and the guitar doesn't sound at all like a musical instrument. Real choppy, too.
The sound tracks on the Audacity all appear below the 0.0 on both lines.
I know the sound on the computer is good because it will play a CD. I can plug the headphone connection into the Crate and it comes through just fine (not at all like a bee in a jar).
We are however, making some excellent progress here. Suggestions? Other than get a life!?

Let me read back through the posts, to refresh my memory and figure out what seems to be working and what doesn't, and I'll get back to you.

Great, thanks. Probably, as you suggested before, it's the NADY.

Let me see if I have this right.

1. If you connect the headphone output of the mixer to the CD input of the Crate (without the Nady or Computer), you get good sound from the Crate?
2. If you connect the CD/Tape output of the mixer to the CD input of the Crate (without the Nady or Computer), you get no sound from the Crate?
3. If you connect the headphone output of the mixer to the Computer via the Nady, you can record sound in Audacity but it is very bad quality?
4. If you connect the CD/Tape output of the mixer to the Computer via the Nady, you get no sound when you record in Audacity?
5. With the Headphone out of the mixer connected to the Nady, does it make a difference which USB port you use? (Remember that to change the USB port you have to close Audacity, change the port and open Audacity again)

If the answer to the first four questions is "Yes", then you have two problems; the CD/Tape out on the mixer is broken and the Nady doesn't work properly.

You can get round the mixer fault by using the Headphone output, but you need something to replace the Nady.
The Behringer website says that the Xenyx comes with a USB interface (UCA200). Do you have that? Maybe not, if you bought the Nady.
This thread http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=9477 has reviews of sound cards that work well with Audacity.

One thing that seems odd; you said
"I've got the NADY connector plugged in to the USB port marked "Digital Media"
It seems odd that one USB port should be labelled differently from the others. What is the model number of your laptop?

One other thing; I would recommend upgrading to Audacity version 1.3. It won't make any difference to your connection problems, but it is much improved over version 1.2.
1.3.12 is the current release, and is available from here; http://audacityteam.org/download/
You can have both 1.2 and 1.3 installed on your computer, but you can use only one at a time. Projects saved in 1.3 can't be opened in 1.2
