Defragmenting was one of the first things I tried--no luck with that.
Shutting down my anti-virus software didn't change anything.
I don't think I installed anything that would affect it. I got a new scanner and monitor not too long ago.
Now Audacity 1.3.4 I have had better luck with! I made several recordings, even long ones, with no problems. Then I tried making another recording and it crashed my computer when I tried to stop it; I actually had to press the reset button to recover. On the plus side, Audacity was able to recover my work in progress when it started again--nice feature. After that, I recorded a little more without incident. So, perhaps it's OK, if slightly unstable. At least I've been able to record some things.
Do you want me to try anything else to figure out what's going on? Thanks for your help in any case.

Re: Audacity hangs after stopping recording
The only other thing I can think of at the moment, is some other process or application that is tunning in the background that is upsetting Audacity. You could try going into Task Manager and shutting down any other applications that are running, then shutting down unnecessary processes and see if you can get Audacity to record and stop.
