opening recorded files

Post by jaimz2 » Sat Dec 29, 2007 9:15 pm

I just recorded hours of stuff and now I can't seem to find the project file. (*.aup). I was putting them inside the folder of the first one I created, not knowing that there would be sub folders that would be created with the data inside that same folder. Now I have a bunch of folders that have the raw data inside them (buried) with no *.aup file anywhere.

Is there a way to import them into an empty project? I notice when I click on the raw data files they play really fast.

I am using 1.3.4 beta

You simply have to go File > Save Project and save to a permanent location. If you save again e.g. between a break in recording just use File > Save Project again to update the same project. Audacity does the rest, creating the .aup and the _data folder with all the .au files inside. Try searching your computer for *.aup otherwise you have to use a crash recovery tool and make sure all the .au files are in date order and in a strict numerical sequence. See

Did you save the performance projects with different names? Guitar1.aup, guitar2.aup, guitar3.aup? If you did, you just need to match up the AUP file with the right _data folder. If there is only one _data folder, you're probably dead. You may also be dead if you kept saving the project AUP file with the same name. In that case, you may only have the last performance surviving.

Audacity Projects are a thing of wonder.

By the way next time you record live performances, stop every so often and Export As WAV.... That does give you a non-magic, stand-alone sound file that you can email or edit or do whatever you want. I recorded the entire voice track for a theatrical short like that. It worked perfectly.
