Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

.wav download

Post by schnahz » Sat Jan 23, 2010 2:26 am

Hi and thank you in advance for reading my question.
I have downloaded audio in the .wav format and used WindowsMedia Player to open it. I built up a playlist and imported it into audacity using the raw import but when I play the playlist in audacity there is nothing there. I appreciate any suggestions.

A playlist is just a list that tells a media player what tracks to look for and where to look for them. It doesn't contain any audio and Audacity won't recognise it.

You will have to import each WAV file separately into Audacity.

And while Audacity will paly audio - it is not designed to nbe a music player - it is designed to be an editor.

You need a music jukebox software like iTunes or one of the many others.

Thanks Irish and Wax cylinder,
I download individual sentences in foreign languages from sites set up to help people learn foreign languages. I was trying to to bundle the sentences into a playlist and then get them into audacity where I could duplicate the sentences and leave silent spaces between the sentences which gives me time to mimic the speaker; and then put these tracks on my portable mp3 player. So guess I'll have to be content to put each sentence I download individually into Audacity which truth be told isn't that much harder than trying to import a playlist of individual sentences.

Thanks,
Schnahz

You can use Audacity to do what you want.

Here's how:

1. Import each sentence as a separate track into Audacity. There is no theoretical limit to the number of tracks you can have.
2. Use the time-shift tool (The double-headed arrow) to move the second and subsequent tracks along the timeline so that when all the tracks are played together, you get all the sentences in the right order with the required gaps between them.
3. Export the entire project as a WAV file. You will get a sinlgle file with all the sentences and the silences between them, which you can burn to a CD or, alternatively, if you want a smaller file to listen to on your iPod, export the project as mp3.
