Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Why Do EQ Adjustmenst Not Work?

Post by KenRyan » Wed Jan 20, 2010 5:38 pm

Does the EQ effect in Audactiy only affect the entire track? I tried applying EQ to a certain selection of my audio, then clicking "OK," but the wave form remains unchanged(?). If I use the FFT Filter, I CAN change just a selected area.

Am I missing something? Thanks.

Does the selected area sound different? If you make an equalization change that doesn't change the waveform very much, you may not be able to see it -- but you should be able to hear it.

What kinds of changes are you trying to make? You select a portion of your show, open Effect > Equalization, push the blue line around to where you want it and press OK. Did I get any of that wrong? I just did it on a simple sound clip and it worked perfectly.

Koz,

Yes I used it as you describe, but I had only a very small (about a 10th of a second) portion selected. As an experiment, I dragged the blue line on the EQ tool as far down as it will go (looks like -24db), and it did not affect the sound or the wave form. Then I tried choosing one of the preset curves on a 10-second section, and it worked as expected, chaning both the waveform and the sound. Perhaps there is a minimum amount of audio needed in the selection?

Thanks,

Ken

Koz,

I tried gradually increasing my selection size until I got to half a second (I actually only had about a tenth selected initially). It was only at that point that the EQ affected my audio. So I guess there is a half-second minimum selection?

If you upgrade to Audacity 1.3.11 there is no minimum length limit for the Equalizer.

Yes, but it's a very mature Beta now - approaching Release Candidate status.

For many modern platforms it's actually more stable than the officially "stable" 1.2.6

The last two generations of modern Macs will not run Audacity 1.2.

In that sense, it's perfectly stable.
