completely new user - no sound is recording

I have recently purchased a USB Turntable & Cassette Converter (USBT005) and I installed the audacity program on my latop which uses Windows XP, but when I try recording it doesn't record anything at all. What am I doing wrong?? All the manual tells me is to do is plug everything in and hit the record button and nothing happens. PLEASE HELP.

BTW I would recommend updating to the latest Audacity Beta release 1.3.11 - you can download it from here:
