New user trying to export into itunes with audio

I am a new user of audacity. I recorded in audacity and exported into itunes. It showed up in the itunes library but no sound when played backed in the itunes library. It was exported as a wav. I deleted the music out of itunes, downloaed the mp3 conversion soft ware, saved the music in audacity as an .aud file and then tried to export again. But itunes is not importing the file. I'm using a Dell with window xp. Can any body help?
