Exported mp3 or wav file is blank

I have Windows XP and am using Audacity 1.2.6. I'm attempting to convert vinyl to mp3's and eventually burn them to CD's.
I've conquered recording the tracks, splitting them, etc. I have downloaded LAME.
I can export the tracks into wav or mp3 files, but when I try to play them back in Windows Media Player there is no sound. My volume is all the way up (no mute). I have also tried importing the saved track back into Audacity to see if there is any sound, and it plays like a champ!
What am I doing wrong??? Help!

Audacity default bit depth is 32-bit floating, not the much more common 16-bit. Change in Audacity preferences and then restart Audacity.
You can convert your existing show to 16-bit.
Depth Conversion
-- Track Name > Set Sample Format > 16-bit PCM

I checked and that was already the setting I had chosen. I was ready to give up, when I just clicked one of the files for one last try and it actually played! I tried the rest of my test files and they all play now.
Maybe there is something about trying to play the files in WMP while Audacity is still open. Once it's closed, I'm good. Thanks!

I'm having the exact same issue. I'm running XP and Audacity 1.2.6. I've been capturing audio stories from a cassette tape. The process is flawless and the end result is an Audacity .aup file that plays in Audactity just great.
When I export it appears to go smoothly. I end up with a .wav file. That .wav file will open and play on my WMP11.
Problem: There is no sound or anything resembling noise, just silence. (Yes, I've checked my mute)
What I've tried: 1) I tried changing the default bit depth between 16-bit and 32-bit. 2) I tried rerecording in with the different bit depths 3) I loaded Lame and tried exporting to MP3, same result, no sound. 4) Tried playing the files with Audacity open and with it closed.
Not sure what to try next. Any suggestions?

Import the WAV file back into a new Audacity project - does it play?

I have just joined the forum to look for an answer to what appears to be the exact same problem.
(Using Audacity 1.2.6 in Windows XP Pro).
I have recorded off a vinyl record using a USB turntable. I can save the file as an Audacity .aup file with no problem. When I export the file to any format it appears to export it correctly. I have tried both WAV and MP3 formats, and I have re-imported them to Audacity and they still play OK in Audacity. However, when I load them in an external program (I have tried iTunes, Winamp, and Windows Media Player) they appear visually to be playing OK, but they are completely silent. I have checked all volume settings and I can play and hear from other media sources, e.g. CD or download.
