I was using Audacity fine for a couple of weeks but now whenever I use it, it records background noise and completely ignores what I'm trying to record.
I'm using the same cables, laptop and record player so I am at a loss at to what is going wrong.
Does any know?
Cheers

What are you trying to record from - a USB turntable?
If so, see here:

connected to ....?
You will have to describe your set-up as I can't see it.

Broken cable? Busted plug?
Just because cabling worked before it doesn't mean it works now - just ask my cats who once managed a similar slight "reconfiguration" for me !

This box is basically the electronic "gubbins" from an ION USB turntable - thise are known to work ok with Audacity - so your device should work too.
I would still suspect the USB cable or plugs/sockets.
Do you have an alternative USB lead you can try?
Can unplug and re-plug the USB plus and (gently) wiggle them?
Can you try a different USB port on your PC?
And importantly, have you grounded your turntable to the ION box? In addition to the pair of RCA leads from your TT there should be thin, normally black, wire with a spade connector at the end. This should be attacjed to the grounding post on the back of your ION box.
The trouble with USB is that once it drops the signal it cannot re-instate it (so you need to re-boot or unplug/replug)
