exporting file as an MP3

I'm new to Audacity. I recorded a podcast with Audacity and the sound quality was very good. However, I saved it as an MP3 file. I clicked on the saved MP3 file and the playback sounded like I was talking into a tin can.
What am I doing wrong?
To export the file, I clicked file, export as an MP3 file. A widow opened that allowed me to save the file but I was not given a choice re:

quality or bit rate mode.

"Podcasting with Audacity" book I read said a window would open up givivg me these noptions and it isn't opening for me. I suspect this may be the source of my problem????
Help!!! Somebody...I would really appreciate it !!!
ps as far as i can tell i correctly installed LAME....

In Audacity 1.2 you change the MP3 exported bit rate in the Preferences. Restart Audacity after you change it.

32 is the minimum for a mono show.
64 is the minimum for a stereo show.
300 and up is very nearly (but not quite) perfect.

Dear Koz,
Thanks for the reply.
I have version 1.2.6
What did you mean 300 and up is nearly perfect...I don't have the option of going up that high.
