Installing a second device

I have already installed the Audacity program for the Grace Tape2USB cassette player and it is working fine. I just recently purchased a Anders Nicholson turntable that also uses the Audacity program, but the program will not install because I alrerady have it on my harddrive. However, I cannot get the program that is already installed to recognize the turntable. What should I do?

Disconnect the Tape, connect the turntable, reboot.
Wait for booting to complete and check in the Windows Control Panel that the TT is available as a recording device (see here for how to do this on Vista http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... ng_devices )
In the Windows Control Panel, ensure that your TT is selected as the default Recording device and your Sound Card is selected as the default Playback device.

Now open Audacity and go to Edit menu > Preferences and on the first tab (Audio I/O) select the USB TT as the recording device and your sound card as the playback device.

Now, Audacity is not able to find neither the turntable nor the cassette. Should I uninstall the program and then reinstall it?

Did you follow the instructions in my last post? If you did, then the cassette will not be found because it is not connected.

Did you check in the "Windows Control Panel" and ensure that your TT is selected as the default Recording device?
If the turntable is not recognised by Windows then Audacity will not be able to find it.

If Windows does not recognise the turntable, this will make no difference. The device must be recognised by Windows or it will not be available to any program.

I did follow the instructions in your original post and I did not see my turntable listed in the Windows Control Panel. So then I uninstalled the program and reinstalled it. At that point, the Windows Control Panel did not see my cassette or turntable. I plugged one in, then unplugged that one and plugged in the other.

Try plugging the Tape2USB into a different USB socket. Is it recognised? If not try rebooting the computer.
If that works, use "Safely remove hardware" and disconnect the Tape2USB. Then try it again in the original USB socket.

Do both the Tape2USB and the turntable have their own USB leads or are you using the same lead?

Don't plug the turntable back in yet - if the first USB socket that you were using became non-functional when you plugged the turntable in, it is possible that the turntable has damaged it.
