Importing WAV and getting clipping and time distortion

Hello Folks. I've used Audacity for some time but am new to the Forum and would be grateful for some help. I have many audio (WAV) files created by Audacity as commentary for slide shows. They play fine in Windows Media Player etc but if I open or import them in Audacity they clip badly in amplitude and seem to be hugely compressed in timescale. This is the first time I have tried to open a file created in Vista since I upgraded to Win7. If I record a file from the microphone and save it and then reopen it it is fine. I've installed Audacity on a new laptop (also Win7) and I get the same problem when opening an old file. Can anyone help?

It sounds like there is a minor problem in Audacity recognising the format correctly. That could be to do with the version of Audacity that you used to create them, or the version that you are now using (you've not told us either version number). Can you upload an example (preferably a small one) somewhere on the internet and post a links so that we can take a look?

Hi Steve, I was using the latest stable version but I've now installed the Beta (as, I find, is recommended for Win7) and it works fine. Thanks for your help.
