i need help recording. i dont hear sound

i need help recording. i dont hear sound

Hello,
i am using audacity 1.2.6 and operating on a windows xp
i have loaded the karaoke version of a song on audacity and now i would like to add my voice to the track. after i plug in my microphone i press record but i can not hear the music playing so i do not know when to start singing. i have check all volumes and everything is working but when i unplug the microphone i can hear the music. what am i doing wrong?

Is your microphone on mute in the sounds and audio devices portion of control panel?
