Playthrough but I don't select playthrough

I am using a PC with Soundblaster Audigy sound card. I record a track with a microphone to my PC. I record the second track, and select 'play other tracks while recording new one' and unselect 'playthrouh'. in edit/options menu. I end up with the new track a combination of the new recording and the old track. So basically I cannot hear the original track without also getting 'playthrough'.

Is this a limitation of my sound card? Maybe it is not capable of playing back sound without having it bleed into the microphone channel. Yes, I did remember to turn off my speakers, I was listening to the original track through headphones.

Thanks for any insight you can provide,

Aaron

Check that in the SB mixer you have selected "microphone" as your recording source and not "What you Hear".

The default recording source on most SoundBlaster cards is "What You Hear" (which is often called "Stereo Mix" on other sound cards). Having this selected will record whatever is sent to your speakers rather than just recording the source that you want (such as the microphone). The good thing about "What You Hear", is that it allows you to record streaming audio.
