Audacity doesn't record

Post by jwmfsi » Sat Jan 09, 2010 9:46 pm

I received a USB turntable for Christmas and installed the accompanying Audacity CD which is 1.2.6

I was able to record one song each from two different 33 1/3 LP albums after intalling. The next day I tried to record another song from another LP album and noticed I did not have any sound. Thinking perhaps I had muted everything on the volume control button on the task bar I checked it to find that it was not muted. I raised the volume level up and down and mute or not mute it only makes one sound, that little sound it makes when it is muted. I can not figure out how to correct this. The turntable does not record as it is, however I can play mp3 files, and .wav files and .wmv files and have sound on all of them and can control the volume from the volume control button on the task bar. I hope someone knows how to fix this.

Thanks,
John

USB devices have a habit of hijacking the entire sound – output as well as input – and they don’t tend to have loudspeakers (hence “no sound”).

What you need to do is to direct the Windows sound output to your PC's soundcard Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>Audio>Sound Playback - and make this setting to the PC soundcard.

You may also need to ensure that Audacity sends it output to the PC soundcard Edit>Preferences>Audio>Playback - and set this also to your PC soundcard. You may need to stop and restart Audacity for this setting to take effect.

Also have a read of this page from the Wiki: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... turntables

I've done all that you suggested but still can not use the turntable. Improvements [www.improvementscatalog.com] has already sent me one replacement turn table and it doesn't work either and I called again this morning and they are sending me another one today. I don't think it wil work either. I'm pretty sure Audacity has hijacked something in my computer, made some changes somehow, or done something that keeps the volume control button from working and is also the reason that the turntables do not work.

Any more suggestions?
Thanks

Have you by any chance left the Audacity output slider turned right down? It's the one with the little black loudspeaker icon.

Can you be a bit more specific please? I don't understand what you are referring to.
Thanks

There is a toolbar in Audacity called the "Mixer Toolbar" it has to sliders that can be moved left and right along sliding reticulated scales with a minus at one end amd a plus at the other. The lefthand one is the output volume comtrol, it has a speaker icon at the left of it - the one on the right is the input volume control - it has a microphone icon at the left of it.

See this page in the 1.2 manual: http://audacityteam.org/onlinehelp-1.2/ ... _mixer.htm

OK I know where that is, but I down't understand what you meant by: "left the Audacity output slider turned right down"

Please clarify that please.

Have you moved the little control box (pentagonal ideogram with two right angles at the top and point at the bottom) and left it all the way over to the left on the output slider, right by the minus sign?
