Too much automatic noise reduction

I am trying to record some things on my guitar. When I play something that is sustained for a longer period, Audacity records it like its fading which is right but then after a second or two it completely reduces the sound instead of gradually fading. Is there a setting that will make it record exactly what is going on and not auto reduce any sound at all.

There is probably a setting in your Windows sound card for noise reduction or automatic volume control, or something similar that needs to be switched off.
Right-click on the loudspeaker icon on the bottom right of the screen to get into the control panel, and see if you can find it there.

It may be crazier than that. Most WIndows laptops are business machines and are set up for VIOP, Skype, or other telephone communications service. That's what gives you the Automatic Echo Cancellation, Auto Level Set and all the rest of those tool, and yes, that screws up theatrical production something fierce.

I'm prompted to ask how you got your performance into your computer. That's not easy on a Windows machine.
