Can't record stereo mix after reformat?

So basically I used to have a computer where, using Audacity, I could record whatever was coming out of my speakers, basically anything playing on my computer.

I pretty much rebuilt the computer, and now it doesn't work. Where the drop down menu was to choose stereo mix is now grayed out for me.

Do you guys know what the problem might be? Something significantly different is that my new computer has Realtek Audio (which I don't really know how that changes things) since my brother helped me build it and he's much more computer savvy.

As for specs, I'm running on Windows XP using Audacity 1.2.6.

Anyway, if anyone has suggestions or ideas to why I can't record stereo mix feel free to send them my way! Thanks in advance =]

Don't worry about that box being greyed out, it shouldn't stop you from recording.

What is important is that you have the correct input (recording) device selected in "Preferences" AND selected in the Windows Mixer.

To test that it is working, click on the "Input Level Meter" (near the middle at the top in your screen shot, just above the microphone icon). When a signal is present that can be recorded, you will see the meter flicker.

Yeah, it doesn't work. I have the input (recording) device set as Realtek HD Digital Input (what does it mean "AND selected in the Windows Mixer"?) and it still won't record anything.
