Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Editing question

Post by Thaddeus » Sat Dec 22, 2007 9:04 pm

I'm new to Audacity and I'm looking for the easiest way to do something -

I create a new project and import an audio track. I select the last half of the track and "split" so I now have the first half of the audio on the top track and the last half of my audio on the lower track. Now I select the last 10s of the top track and delete it and use the time shift tool to move the bottom track and close the gap. In summary, I've deleted 10s from the middle of my audio track.

After a lot more editing and tweaking elsewhere in the project I decide that I want to change what I've done above, I only want to remove 5s, not 10. What is the easiest way to get part of my deletion back?

Thanks in advance
Thaddeus

It's the "lot more tweaking and editing" that you did after the deletion that makes life hard for you - otherwise tou might have been able to use Audacity's Edit/Undo .... to revert.

But this means you would also lose all subsequent editing after the 10s deletion - and I'm assuming that you dont't want to do that. I am hoping that you still have the original recording and can find the 10s-5s piece that you want back. Then you could copy this section from the original into a new track in the edited project and electronicaly splice it in - using methods based on what you describe already having done with timeshift etc.

Your biggest problem will be getting the tracks lined up exactly - to hep you with this you will need to zoom in probaly to the point where you can see the individual samples - and then line the tracks up. You may still have a little disjoint at the "joins" which will sound like a click or bump. This can be smoothed out with the Repair effect in Audacity 1.3.x

Note carefully that you can open your 1.2 project in 1.3 - but after that it will have to remain on 1.3 and will not be openable in 1.2 any more. Note too that you can have 1.2 and 1.3 installed on the same PC.

Good luck with the repair

Thanks for helping out.

I do have the original, what I was looking for was an easy way. I have a video editor - "Pinnacle Studio" where you can edit 2 audio tracks with cuts / fades, etc. If you've trimmed a segment you can drag the end marker to reinstate it. I was hoping that there might be a similar function. I understand what you say about cutting a new bit in, I had no idea where to start with the lining it up problem, I'll try doing it visually with the samples as you suggest.

Thanks again for the help

T

one of the weak areas of Audacity is its inability to habdle markers - there are lots of postings alluding to this on the forum.

It's something that drives Kozikowski wild - and not with delight (like you, he has a video editing background).
