Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

No Sound on Playback

Post by mopatop23 » Sat Dec 22, 2007 1:07 pm

I have a USB turntable, which I have previously used successfully with Audacity, but since having problems with my computer I now find that I get no sound on playback.

I have updated the drivers for my soundcard, I have reinstalled the Audacity software, my soundcard is selected in both record and playback and the "software playthrough" box is ticked.

I'm stumped - can anyone offer any advice.

Thanks

The setting that you need is "Edit->Preferences->Audio I/O" then look at the box "Playback Device". This should be your soundcard and NOT the turntable (as the turntable is only an input/Recording device, not playback).

Hi,

thanks for the reply, have checked that and the Playback Device is already set as my soundcard.

What should the Recording Device be? Should that me my soundcard too or something else?

cheers

Your recording device should be the USB turntable. Software playthrough should be off - to hear the turntable while you record, you should plug the phono connectors of the turntable into your hi-fi.

I had used Audacity months ago, and it played well. Now I want to use it again, but I cannot hear the sound. The sound waves are visible, though. By trying to change settings (Control panel, Sounds and Audio Devices) , I must have messed up my audio settings, because I can not hear any sound, not from iTunes nor from a CD, even the Media Player is mute. The volume control shows all the right settings, and the speakers are on.
I have a Dell Dimension 4550 desk top, Windows XP Home Edition, Sound Card: Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device, Creative SB Live! Series (WDM)
What should be the basic settings for playback of iTunes or CDs?
Is there a different setting for the Audacity? And which?
Do I have to switch between the two?
I am so eager to record some cherished old records , but I am stuck.
Can you help?
Thanks,

I just posted a question on the board, but I have to correct myself : I fiddled a bit with the settings, and now I can hear sound both from iTunes and from Media Player. When I bring up Audacity, I see and hear a very short clip of music which I must have recorded, but I can not continue recording.
I guess I have to work through the manual with dilligence and find my way.

The previously posted question and the answer were a good help. Thank you.

I had posted twice yesterday .
Today, I got my Window Media Player and iTunes playing, but the turntable with Audacity failed me: no sound, so sound waves. Yesterday at least I saw sound waves. What do I do wrong?

breidenbach,

Can you record anything using Windows Sound Recorder (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment)? That will tell us whether the problem is with Audacity or your Turntable.

It should be a simple matter of making sure that the turntable is selected in Audacity's Edit -> Preferences -> Audio I/O menu, but if there's something wrong with the drivers or the turntable itself then we'll have to dig deeper.

That said, the people who made your turntable should be able to help you faster than we can.

Don't select the "Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device" for input or output, only the "Creative SB Live! Series (WDM)" should be used for playback.
For recording your turntable, your recording device should be the USB turntable (as previously stated).
