Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

*How do I reduce noise after amplifying...

Post by audshield » Wed Jan 06, 2010 2:55 am

...a tiny portion of a track? (Vista Premium)
This is a recording of a conversation.
1) I highlighted a portion of a track containing a single word in a conversation ("yeah?").
2) Effect>Noise removal>Get Noise Profile
3) I go back and Effect>Noise removal>Adjust slider (tried this from 25-50%), previewed to treat myself to a very strange, alien-like, tinny whistling noise
4) As no adjustment of the slider for selecting the amount of noise removal seemed to improve this, I clicked "Remove Noise".
5) There was either no signal/noise at all, or either ("yeah?") was amplified, and there was still substantial noise.
Any suggestions, while I still have a few strands of hair left on me 'ead?

You need to select a portion of the recording that contains noise only, not any conversation of anything you want to preserve, then click "Get Noise Profile".

Also, the Noise Removal effect is much improved in 1.3.x.

I'd recommend the nightly build of 1.3.11 from here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... tly_Builds

Okay, Bill...I've got the "nightly build". Is it now only a simple matter of unzipping and installing it? Is this a complete program, drivers, what?
Thanks for your help.

Version 1.2.x and 1.3.x can both be installed on your machine, but you can use only one at a time. Projects saved in version 1.3.x cannot be opened in 1.2.x.

As for specific installation instructions, I'll leave that to one of the Windows elves here on the forum. No drivers are installed, just the program and it's support files (plug-ins, nyquist and Languages).

As it says on the download page: "Instructions: Extract the contents of the zip to a new folder and double-click audacity.exe"
To make life easier you can create a Desktop shortcut to the EXE file.
Something else that I like to do is to create an empty folder in the same directory as the audacity.exe file and name it "Portable Settings". If this folder is present then Audacity will store its Preferences in that folder and keep them separate from the Preferences for any other installed version.
