Lost Files?

Quick question...

I was trying to convert two of my .aup files to .mp3 this morning but when i open them in Audacity, no audio shows up. I tried to open again but the program says the file is already open.

I can see the .aup file and the _data folder where the files are saved but I also noticed a .bak file has been created for these two tracks.

however, the _data folders are empty. no .au files.

I think i may have jacked something up when closing the tracks last night.

Is there anyway to recover the audio with the .bak file that was created or am I screwed?

How do i prevent this in the future?

If there are no .au files in that _Data folder, then there is no data to be opened. The .bak file won't help you.

And if Audacity isn't complaining about an error when you first start it, then those files are probably gone for good.

Well, I can't say without knowing why those files aren't there (or were removed).

This would happen if you delete all the tracks from a project and then save it before closing Audacity. Are in the habit of clearing Audacity's workplace (by removing all the tracks) before closing it? It's best not to do that.
